ANNAPOLIS, Md. -- Rock and roll all-star band Scrap Metal, known as the “rock and roll rat pack,” kicked off the Naval Academy’s homecoming weekend at a pep rally Thursday, Oct 20 performing in front of more than 2,000 Midshipmen on the campus grounds in Annapolis, Md.
Multi-platinum rockers Gunnar Nelson and Matthew Nelson and Mark Slaughter, as well as special guests Janet Gardner, former lead singer of the all-girl rock band Vixen, and Derek St. Holmes of Ted Nugent played for the midshipmen. Howie Simon of Alcatraz and drummer Bobby Rock of Nelson also joined Scrap Metal for the free concert honoring the nation’s future military leaders.
"This gig is what it's all about for us,” said Scrap Metal co-founder Gunnar Nelson. “Scrap Metal was conceived by a bunch of friends to honor each other through a celebration of their shared love of great rock and roll. Last night, it was OUR honor to play for the Naval Academy's homecoming celebration. The way I see it, 2000 of America's best and brightest just became honorary members of the Scrap Metal family."
Midshipman First Class (senior) Paris Scott said, "This pep rally was the most energetic pep rally that I have seen in my four years being here. The band was amazing and I wish the academy would have more pep rallies like this which promote school spirit and school unity."
